5 signs you’re addicted to work

There are people who absolutely love their job. Then there are people who might be taking the commitment too far.

A study co-conducted by Sheraton Hotels & Resorts and StudyLogic LLC has shown that Finance professionals are getting more help from technology than ever — and that’s not necessarily a good thing. The first two findings aren’t exactly surprising:

  • 85% of those surveyed said technology compels them to stay connected to the office 24/7, and
  • 81% said they worked harder now than they did only five years ago.

But that’s when the technology-addiction questions pulled some interesting responses:

  • 87% of professionals bring their PDA or business cellphones into the bedroom
  • 84% said the last thing they did before going to sleep was check e-mail, and
  • More than one-third of the respondents (35%) said, if forced to choose, they’d choose their PDA over their spouse.

Questions over whether PDAs are replacing pillow talk aside, the survey also found some positive aspects of the never-ending tech connection:

  • 85% said they can spend more time outside the office because of PDAs
  • 84% said their PDAs give them more quality time with family and friends, and
  • 79% felt they’re just as productive outside as they are inside.

The study found one last (possibly disturbing) attitude towards tech: When asked, 62% of people said they loved their PDA.

What do you think? Do you know someone who’s a little too affectionate with work gadgets? Is tech a blessing that helps you get more done than ever before, or does it just make it harder to keep work inside the office? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

This personal technology surge can be a negative externality. The more technological advancements to keep us connected, the more we will fear being unplugged. People are sleeping less because they don’t want to miss anything.

So what are the signs you’re addicted to work?

  3. Judy Says:

I agree with Roger. I didn’t see the five signs that you are addicted to work?

  4. Brian Says:

I don’t see the 5 signs you are addicted to work in this article, either.
Hell, I don’t own a PDA, cellphone, nor a laptop, and I feel very addicted to my accounting management job.
And, I consider myself above average when it comes to technology knowledge.

  5. Mark Says:

I feel very sorry for the 35% respondennts who said they would choose there PDA over there spouse. Tell those poor slobs they need a life.
