Next time you’re cruising eBay or Craigslist, make sure there isn’t any of your company’s property up for sale.

No one’s safe from the economic pinch these days, but Denver resident Thomas Pilaar took things a little too far to make ends meet.

He received a 10-year jail sentence and must pay $53,549 in library fines for checking out about 1,400 books and DVDs and selling them on popular online auction sites. An anonymous buyer tipped off police when she noticed several items from the same seller were emblazoned with public library stamps.

Worse: This isn’t the first time Pilaar’s hijacked library property to pay bills. Denver authorities confiscated 500 DVDs and books from his residence last year in a separate incident.

But the prior incident wasn’t enough to keep Pilaar away — he was able to take out such large quantities of media by using seven library cards with different, falsified information. Libraries in Denver, Douglas County, Aurora and Littleton were his most frequent haunts.
