In 2011, a crane struck a power line near Qwest Field Event Center during the Seattle Boat Show. The accident knocked out power to 240 customers in the area, including the Qwest Center. The show switched over to emergency lighting, and some of the boats switched on their lights to help out as well. There were no known injuries reported as part of this event.

At the 2000 Southampton Boat Show, one of the UK’s top boat shows, one person was fatally wounded after being struck by a boat. The young man was one of three who had been thrown from a RIB (rigid-hulled inflatable boat). Despite the quick attention of paramedics at the scene, he died as a result of his injuries. Out of respect, the boat show suspended all further water-based activities that year.

On the last day of the Monaco Yacht Show in 2010, a young man was killed when his tender collided with an unmanned sailing yacht, just outside Monaco’s Port Hercule Harbor. After many hours of searching by authorities and private boats in the area, the search was called off.

Researchers at the University of Tokyo have figured out that superb memory isn’t the only skill that elephants possess — they’re also outstanding at basic math equations.

In a rudimentary apple-counting exercise where elephants must choose which baskets add up the the highest number, elephants are able to provide the correct answer at least 74% of the time. Other animals like dolphins and chimps are able to pass many math tests, but elephants excel at distinguishing numbers regardless of their size.

For example, chimps can easily tell the difference between two bananas and ten. When it’s a choice between seven bananas and eight, their ability to discern plummets. So far, the elephants aren’t hitting that same roadblock.

The question that still eludes researchers is why elephants would need to count. Some scientists claim it’s because of their pack-animal nature, where parent elephants would need to keep track of an entire herd.

The Somerset County Jail in Skowhegan, ME is currently on sale for a paltry $200,000. After a new 200-bed lockup opens in nearby Madison, the town will have little use for the old, 14,000-square foot facility.

Don’t let the fact that it’s an old jail turn your business away, say local real estate agents and county commissioners. The property could be used for an art gallery, a restaurant, gift shop, or even a bus station.

If your Finance department’s into tight security, there’s nary a safer place to be — even if a criminal were to make off with sensitive records, they’d never be able to clear the razor-wire fencing. (Yes, it’s still up.)

Are your employees into benefits? The facility comes with an atmospheric exercise area. And instead of cubicles, people can stretch out in their very own “private offices.”
