Employees say extra hours put them in early graves

Here’s one way to shave the budget: Offer employees cemetery plots instead of vacation days.

It’s the slightly-morbid conversation we’d never like to hear in our Payroll department: “Can we let employees trade their comp time for a freshly-dug grave?”

That didn’t stop Dade City, FL officials from bringing it up. City workers have accumulated almost $756,000 in sick leave, vacations, etc., and the city commission is having a hard time coming up with the funds.

Maria Rose Kussler, caretaker of the Dade City Cemetery, said: “It’s a great opportunity. I know plenty of employees who do have comp time that said they are definitely going to buy lots.”

The plots cost $400 for people who live outside the city, while in-town residents get a deep discount — they’ll only have to fork over $350 per grave. If enough employees opt into the plan, it could save the city thousands of dollars.
