How seriously do people take their retirement funds? Just ask officials in Japan, who are on the hunt for a killer targeting those responsible for botched pensions.

Pension officials have infuriated the Japanese public by losing millions of government records, which could cost millions their full pension benefits upon retirement. Even though two prime ministers have already resigned due to the loss of the records, another person is taking the matter into his or her own hands.

When the former head of the Health and Welfare Ministry’s pension division and his wife were found stabbed to death in their home, police chalked it up as a regular homicide.

But days later, the wife of a former pension bureaucrat was stabbed in the chest by a man claiming he worked for a parcel delivery service. Upon opening her front door, it was clear the assailant was on the hunt for her husband — so much so that the wife called from the ambulance to warn her husband.

Authorities said the attacks share three elements:

the victims or intended victims were former pension officials

a knife was used both attacks, and

the attacks occurred only six blocks away from each other.

Until the suspect is apprehended, police have announced a nationwide alert for attacks against current and former officials involved in welfare and pension issues.

Handling the workload when a co-worker’s out on disability can be a Herculean task. Speaking of which …

When Boston firefighter Albert Arroyo was granted accidental disability retirement, his supervisors probably envisioned him taking it easy — plenty of rest, some therapy sessions, etc.

Finishing eighth in the 2008 Pro Natural American Bodybuilding Championships? Probably not the first thing that sprang to mind.

But that’s exactly what happened. After Arroyo claimed six weeks of his full salary tax-free because he was “totally and permanently disabled,” fire commissioner Roderick Fraser learned of Arroyo’s training regimen and record as a bodybuilder.

When asked how he could claim disability while performing in the rigorous physical competitions, Arroyo told the commissioner that “bodybuilding helps ease the back pain.”

His boss’s response: “If he can lift weights, work out constantly, and enter bodybuilding contests, then he can inspect a building.”

This incident couldn’t have been at a worse time for Boston — a federal grand jury has been issuing scores of subpoenas to the city’s firefighters as part of a criminal investigation into years of questionable injury claims.

Of course, after looking at Arroyo’s claim, it’s easy to see that something wasn’t right: He reported he’d had an accident that no one witnessed, at a firehouse where he wasn’t assigned.

Overly motivated employees might not always be an asset to the company — especially if they’d kill to get ahead. Literally.

Take, for example, the Indian man who created a job opportunity for himself by murdering his own father.

The father was due to retire the next day, and the son believed that if his dad passed away while still employed, he could claim his father’s job. Retirement is overrated anyway, right?

Even more incestuous — the son hired a relative to do his dirty work. After all, you can only trust family. The price on his father’s head: $2,500.

We’ve heard of white collar crime, but the murder wasn’t even over a C-level position — the father had only held a low-ranking government job.

Ever seen someone who was a little too desperate to get a job? Share your stories in the comments section below.
