‘You want to call the restaurant WHAT??’

Ever thought about bringing your business overseas? Beware: Not all prospects translate as well as they should.
Pop quiz: You’re sitting in a restaurant that features buffalo wings, hamburgers, football games — and a wait staff wearing owl-adorned tank tops and too-tight orange shorts. Where are you?
If you said a Hooters restaurant somewhere in the U.S., you’d be wrong.
The same sights can be seen in the international version of the American-based restaurant, albeit with some subtle changes. China, which currently has five franchise locations, features much of the same food and entertainment. But instead of “Hooters,” the popular restaurants are known as “American Owl.”
Some meaning may have been lost in translation, but that hasn’t stopped business from booming. Currently, Hooters has 67 international locations (about 15% of the total number of restaurants) in 26 counties, including Australia, Singapore and Mexico.
Although the company attributes much of its business to the scantily-clad waitstaff, locations outside of the U.S. believe an interest in American culture is as important as the tank tops.
